The annual Oakley BC BBQ again proved a huge success. Attended by almost 90 members and friends it was good to have so many of our newer members joining us. It was not a warm day but after all the rain on the Saturday we were just so grateful that it was dry. Jamie Colman kindly allowed members to wander around the gardens of Malshanger house. This year Ric, our Social Committee chair, inflicted bingo upon us (though we did not really mind, as all the proceeds were going to President Norman's charity Naomi House), and shortly afterwards we were tucking into the pulled pork rolls, stuffing, apple sauce etc, followed by apple pie and ice cream served up for us by Graham and Amanda. The bar was busy throughout and our thanks go to Martin Smith and Gary Newson who served behind it for most of the afternoon. Events like this do not just happen. Gazebos have to be erected (and taken down). Chairs have to put out and taken in again. Plates and glasses need washing. Raffle prizes have to be purchased and tickets sold. II is very much a team effort and thanks go not only to Ric and his Social Committee but to everyone who, on the day, mucked in and helped. We may, at the end of the afternoon, have decamped to the clubhouse to take shelter from the wind but it did not detract from an event that was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.
